Case Study: HRM Homecare Service Manager Yvette talks about her career in Social Care
Yvette, HRM Homecare Service Manager.
I have been working for HRM Homecare since September last year but my career in care began back in 2009. After a friend passed away it made me realise that life is too short, and that I should pursue my dream to go to college so I enrolled at Cardonald College and gained an HNC in Health and Social Care.
My work placement while at college took me to Alzheimer Scotland where I got my first job as a support worker and day centre organiser, working in the community. It was tremendous, I felt it suited me down to the ground and I knew a career in Social Care was for me.
As well as working in care, I am a mother of two girls. I had my first over 10 years ago, and last year I was pregnant and gave birth during the first lockdown. An old colleague suggested I apply to HRM Homecare, saying it was a good place to work.
I then took up a full-time position as a Service Manager and it’s now six months in and I’m finding it the most rewarding job that I’ve had. Being a Service Manager is tough, can be challenging, so for it to work you need a good team and excellent support.
I receive this and more at HRM Homecare. I am surrounded by a great team, we have grown and learned so much together, it is a pleasure working with them. Also, the support from everyone, including senior management, has been amazing. They never ask me to do something that they would not do themselves and they continue to support my professional development, as I am currently undergoing an SVQ Level 4 in Leadership and Management.
HRM Homecare offers me an excellent work-life balance as a mother and as a healthcare professional.
